My level 2 learning experience expanded my knowledge of Buddhism and taught me more about how to use the teachings to benefit others - not just myself. During the lectures, listening to stories about the Buddha is what I found to be most educational because they show how the teachings have applied to real life situations. I also liked having homework questions at the end of every class because this gave me something to think about during the week and encouraged more reflection on what I learned.
Sometimes, the material can feel kind of abstract and confusing. For example I found myself forgetting and confusing the lists like “the four immeasurable minds”, “the four ways of fellowship”, “the three links of cultivation”, etc. This is why I think it is best when I can see how these teachings apply to real life. When we have class discussions about the material, I enjoy hearing others’ thoughts about the material and how they apply it to their lives because I also see how I can learn from my classmates.
Another aspect that I think is helpful and could be done more often is using the material to guide us at the start of and during our meditation. Having opportunities to contemplate on the material during meditation can help me maintain focus and reflect more deeply on the teachings. For example, when I meditate I often feel distracted by bodily sensations and my mind’s tendency to want to judge and fix things. It would be very helpful during meditation to be gently reminded of the four foundations of mindfulness or compassion contemplation because it teaches me to focus on being present and let go of all the distractions.
Overall, I find myself looking forward to coming to class, and feel very appreciative of the opportunity to learn from the Buddha’s profound wisdom.
